A native of Columbus, Ohio, Captain Sherman earned his Bachelor of Science degree from THE Ohio State University and received his commission through Ohio State’s ROTC Program.  He was designated a Naval Aviator in February 1999.

In March 1999 he reported to the “Airwolves” of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light FOUR ZERO (HSL-40) in Jacksonville, FL and began flying the SH-60B Seahawk helicopter. His first fleet assignment was with the “Grandmasters” of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light FOUR SIX (HSL-46) where he deployed aboard USS MOOSEBRUGGER (DD-980) and USS TAYLOR (FFG-50).  In 2002 he earned the HSL-46 Maintenance Officer of the Year Award.

In December 2002, Captain Sherman moved to San Diego, CA and reported to the west coast Fleet Replacement Squadron, Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light FOUR ONE (HSL-41), as an instructor pilot.  During his time with the “Seahawks,” he attended the Seahawk Weapons and Tactics Instructor course and served as the Squadron Weapons and Tactics Instructor.

In January 2006, he reported to Commander, Carrier Air Wing TWO (CVW-2) and deployed in USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN-72) in the SEVENTH Fleet Area of Responsibility (AOR).

In March 2008, Captain Sherman reported to the “Saberhawks” of HSL-47 and deployed as the Officer-in-Charge of Detachment TWO, assigned to USS SHOUP (DDG-86), where he deployed to the FIFTH Fleet AOR, supporting Operations IRAQI FREEDOM and ENDURING FREEDOM.  He then changed aircraft to the MH-60R and transitioned HSL-47 to Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron SEVEN SEVEN (HSM-77).  Serving as Squadron Operations Officer, he again deployed in USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN to the FIFTH Fleet AOR supporting Operation NEW DAWN.  In 2010 he was designated as the HSM-77 Officer of the Year.

In December 2010, Captain Sherman reported to United States Southern Command in Miami, Florida.  There he served in the J5 Strategy, Plans, and Policy Directorate as the Lead Planner for the Theater Campaign Plan.

In May 2014, he moved back to Jacksonville, FL and reported to the “Proud Warriors” of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron SEVEN TWO (HSM-72) as the Executive Officer.  He then assumed command in August 2015.  Under his command, HSM-72 deployed for the first time as an integrated Carrier Air Wing squadron with Carrier Air Wing SEVEN embarked in USS HARRY S. TRUMAN (CVN-75), with additional elements embarked in USS ANZIO (CG-68), USS BULKELEY (DDG-84) and USS GRAVELY (DDG-107), supporting Operation INHERENT RESOLVE. His “Proud Warrior” team earned multiple awards including the 2016 Battle Efficiency Award, 2016 Isabell Trophy, and the 2016 ADM “Jimmy” Thach Award.

In his most recent assignment, in December 2016 Captain Sherman reported to USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN-73), homeported in Norfolk, VA as the Operations Officer and  overall Habitability Production Lead during a Refueling Complex Overhaul maintenance availability.

Captain Sherman has logged over 3,200 hours in multiple aircraft and has been awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and various unit commendations and service medals.
